ACT Essay: Write Smooth Paragraph Transitions That Flow Naturally
The Bridge Sentence That Connects Paragraphs
A bridge sentence appears at the start of a new paragraph and connects it to the previous one. Formula: (1) Reference the previous idea in one phrase. (2) Introduce the new idea in the rest of the sentence. Example: "While confidence matters, resilience is equally important." This acknowledges the previous paragraph's point (confidence) and pivots to the new one (resilience). Without bridge sentences, paragraphs feel disconnected. Essays with smooth transitions score 8-9; essays with abrupt jumps between paragraphs score 5-6. This transition skill alone can raise your essay score by 2-3 points.
Bad transition: End of paragraph 1: "...so competition builds confidence." Start of paragraph 2: "Now let's talk about something else: teamwork." This is jarring. Better: "Beyond individual confidence, competition teaches teamwork..." This acknowledges paragraph 1 while introducing paragraph 2.

Use these to build bridges: "Furthermore" (adds to previous), "However" or "Meanwhile" (contrasts), "As a result" (shows consequence), "In addition" (extends idea), "For example" (illustrates). Each word tells your reader how the new paragraph relates to the last. Using transition words is not mandatory, but they make connections crystal clear and earn points with graders for organizational sophistication.
Practice writing paragraphs with bridge sentences. Read them aloud. Do they flow? Or does each paragraph feel isolated? Refine until they flow.
Bridge Sentence Practice
Write a short three-paragraph essay (introduction, two body paragraphs, no conclusion). Between each paragraph, write a bridge sentence that acknowledges the previous idea and introduces the new one. Have someone read it and tell you: "Do the paragraphs feel connected?" If yes, your bridges work. This practice teaches you to build coherence, a habit that improves essay quality and grader perception.
Do this practice twice per week for three weeks. By test day, writing bridge sentences will feel natural.
