ACT Science: Read Graph Axes Like a Data Expert

Before you read a single data point on a graph, spend 10 seconds on the axes. Read the x-axis label (horizontal) and y-axis label (vertical). Check the units (meters, seconds, percentage, etc.). Note the scale (does it go 0-10, 0-100, or 0-1,000?). Notice if the scale is linear (equal spacing) or logarithmic (compressed spacing, often used for very large ranges). Students who skip this habit make unit errors and misread scales, costing 1-2 points per test section. Students who develop this habit never make these preventable errors.

Example: A graph shows "Time (seconds)" on the x-axis, 0-10 scale, and "Distance (meters)" on the y-axis, 0-100 scale. When a question asks "What is the distance at t=5 seconds?", you know to look at x=5, find the y-value, and report it in meters. A student who skips axis reading might accidentally report seconds instead of meters, answering the question wrong.

Error 1: Misreading the scale. The axis goes 0-50, not 0-100. The student reads the wrong values. Error 2: Forgetting units. You find the number but forget it is in kilograms, not grams. Error 3: Confusing x and y axes. Error 4: Not noticing a non-zero starting point. The y-axis starts at 20, not 0, making the slope look steeper than it is. Error 5: Misinterpreting logarithmic scale as linear, causing you to misread the relationship. Learn these five errors and you will avoid them, a simple habit that prevents 1-2 careless errors per test section.

Before you answer a question about a graph, check: (1) What is the x-axis label and unit? (2) What is the y-axis label and unit? (3) What is the scale on the x-axis (e.g., 0-10, 0-100)? (4) What is the scale on the y-axis? (5) Is either scale logarithmic or compressed? (6) Does the y-axis start at zero or another value? Check all six boxes silently in 10 seconds. Then answer the question. This checklist prevents the careless errors that distinguish students scoring 27 from those scoring 30 on Science.
