ACT Science Calculate Average and Mean: A Simple But Frequently Tested Skill

How to Calculate Average (Mean)

Average (Mean)=Sum of all values/Number of values. Example: Values are 10, 20, 30. Sum=60. Number of values=3. Average=60/3=20. This one formula is all you need for any average question on ACT Science. Apply it mechanically and you'll never miss these points. Common variation: The question gives you the average and asks for a missing value. Rearrange: Sum=Average×Number of values, then solve for the missing number.

Key insight: Average smooths out data to show the typical or central value. Questions often ask about trends relative to the average (above, below, at average).

Three Average Calculation Mistakes

Mistake 1: Including non-relevant values in the sum or count. A table might show multiple variables; only average the variable the question asks for. Mistake 2: Forgetting to divide by the correct count. If you sum five values, divide by 5, not 6. Mistake 3: Confusing average with median or mode. Average (mean) is sum divided by count. Median is the middle value. Mode is the most frequent. ACT asks for mean unless otherwise specified. Always verify you're calculating what the question asks for.

During practice, write out the formula for each problem: Sum=___. Count=___. Average=Sum/Count=___. This step-by-step approach prevents errors.

Five Average Problems From Tables

Problem 1: Values are 15, 20, 25. Average=(15+20+25)/3=60/3=20. Problem 2: Values are 100, 110, 120, 130. Average=(100+110+120+130)/4=460/4=115. Problem 3: Average is 25, count is 4. What is the sum? Sum=25×4=100. Problem 4: Sum is 90, count is 6. Average=90/6=15. Problem 5: Values are 5, 10, 15, 20, 25. Average=(5+10+15+20+25)/5=75/5=15. Solve all five, writing out sum, count, and calculation for each.

Find five average questions from a practice test. For each, apply the formula, verify your count is correct, and double-check your arithmetic. By the fifth problem, average calculations will be automatic.

Why Average Mastery Is Essential

Average (mean) questions appear regularly on ACT Science and are among the easiest if you know the formula. Students who master the average formula pick up 1 point on the science section because the calculation is mechanical and careless errors are preventable.

Drill average calculations daily this week. Each day, calculate the average for five datasets. By test day, you should calculate any average within 15 seconds.
