ACT Reading: When to Skim and When to Deep Read

The Two-Mode Reading System

The most efficient ACT Reading approach uses two modes: skim first, then read carefully. Mode 1 (Skim): Read only the first and last sentences of each paragraph, plus any headings or italicized keywords. Spend 1-2 minutes here. Your goal is to map the passage's structure and main idea without absorbing details. Mode 2 (Deep Read): Go back and read fully only the paragraphs that contain the answers to questions you've identified. This sounds counterintuitive but works because you know what to look for before you invest time. Skimming first prevents you from drowning in detail; targeting saves time on irrelevant passages.

Example: A passage has five paragraphs on climate science. Skim and note: Paragraph 1 introduces the topic, Paragraph 2 covers historical data, Paragraph 3 presents a new model, Paragraph 4 counters it, Paragraph 5 concludes. A question asks "What does the author say about the new model?" Now you deep-read only Paragraph 3 and 4. You've saved 3-4 minutes compared to reading the whole thing twice.

Mistakes Students Make with This Strategy

Mistake 1: Skimming so quickly that you miss the main idea entirely. Spend time on opening and closing sentences. Mistake 2: Deep-reading every passage anyway because you're anxious you'll miss something. If a question doesn't point to a paragraph, trust that you don't need to reread it. Mistake 3: Skimming one passage but deep-reading another with no reason, so you're inconsistent and slow. Mistake 4: Focusing only on skimmed material during the question phase and ignoring details you'll actually need. Balance is key: skim thoroughly enough to know where to look, then dive deep only where it matters.

Test yourself by timing a passage: skim in 1.5 minutes, mark which paragraphs look important for upcoming questions, then answer. Compare your accuracy to your old method. Most students find they're faster and just as accurate.

Three Skim-and-Deep Practice Passages

Find three ACT practice passages of different types (fiction, social science, natural science). For each, set a timer: 1.5 minutes to skim, identifying main idea and structure. Note one detail per paragraph. Then look at the questions and predict which paragraphs you'll need to deep-read. Deep-read only those sections (5-7 minutes total). Answer questions. Compare your time and accuracy to reading the whole passage front-to-back. Repeat this process until the two-mode rhythm feels natural, not effortful.

Track: How many questions can you answer from skim-level understanding alone? Usually 2-3 of 10 (main idea and tone). This tells you where skim is sufficient and where you need to dive.

How Efficient Reading Unlocks More Points

ACT Reading tests comprehension and speed. Many students sacrifice speed to "be sure" they understand, and then run out of time on later passages. Efficient readers use skimming to map the territory, then focus energy on questions that demand detail. This approach frees up 5-8 minutes per section, which you can use to double-check hard questions or reread a tricky passage. The students who score in the 33-36 range usually read faster, not because they're smarter, but because they've trained their eyes to move strategically.

This week, apply two-mode reading to every practice passage. By test day, you'll switch between skim and deep read automatically, without conscious effort.
