ACT Reading: Master the Main Idea vs. Detail Question Difference

Main idea questions ask what the passage is about overall. They use phrasing like "The primary purpose of the passage is..." or "Which of the following best describes the passage as a whole?" Detail questions ask for specific information from the passage. They use phrasing like "According to the passage..." or "Which of the following details is mentioned?" The difference is scope: main idea is big-picture, detail is specific. Your answer to a main idea question should fit the entire passage; your answer to a detail question should point to one sentence or paragraph.

Example: A passage discusses Darwin's theory of evolution, the evidence for it, and objections to it. A main idea answer would be "To explain Darwin's theory and present evidence." A detail answer would be "What evidence did Darwin use?" Both are correct for their question type, but they're answering different scopes.

Main idea mistake: Choosing a detail that's true but too specific. A choice like "Darwin visited the Galápagos Islands" is a true detail but not the main idea. Eliminate it. Detail mistake: Choosing an answer that's generally true but not specifically stated in the passage. "Evolution takes millions of years" might be true in reality, but if the passage doesn't say it, it's not a correct detail. Main idea answers are broad and central; detail answers are narrow and quoted/paraphrased from a specific location.

Build the habit of asking "Is this answer as broad as the whole passage?" for main idea questions. Ask "Is this answer directly stated in one part of the passage?" for detail questions. This filter eliminates most wrong answers.

Take a practice passage with 8-10 questions. For each question, (1) identify whether it's a main idea or detail question based on the wording, (2) before you read the passage, predict the answer scope (broad for main idea, narrow for detail), (3) read the passage, (4) answer the question using your predicted scope. Do this for all questions on the passage. This drill trains you to categorize questions by type before you answer them, which improves accuracy.

Compare your answers to the key. For any you missed, note whether you misidentified the question type or misunderstood the scope. Repeat on two more passages. By the third passage, you should categorize questions perfectly and miss fewer of both types.

About 30% of ACT Reading questions are main idea questions and 30% are detail questions. If you can identify the question type quickly, you can answer both faster and more accurately because you're answering the right question. Students who develop this distinction habit pick up 1-2 points because they stop confusing main idea with detail and wasting time second-guessing their scope.
