ACT Reading Detail Questions: Find the Answer in 30 Seconds Flat

The Spot-and-Verify Method for Detail Questions

Detail questions ask "According to the passage..." or "Which of the following details..." The answer is explicitly stated in the passage; you just have to find it. Method: (1) Identify the key word or phrase from the question. (2) Scan the passage for that word/phrase or its synonym (15 seconds). (3) Re-read the sentence or paragraph containing it (10 seconds). (4) Match the passage's exact claim to the answer choices (5 seconds). Detail questions are the highest-return questions on ACT Reading because they're mechanical: find the location, read the surrounding text, pick the matching answer. Most students lose points on detail questions not because they can't find the answer, but because they second-guess themselves or misread the passage.

Example: Question asks "What time did the meeting occur?" Scan for "meeting" or "time" in the passage. Find "The meeting started at 3 PM." Pick the answer that matches this: "3 PM" or "15:00" depending on the choice format. Done in 30 seconds.

Four Detail Question Traps to Avoid

Trap 1: Choosing an answer that's close to but not exactly what the passage says. If the passage says "majority" but the answer says "all," it's wrong. Trap 2: Using outside knowledge instead of passage information. You know Spain is in Europe, but if the passage says something different, use the passage's claim. Trap 3: Misreading the question's specific requirement. Questions asking "according to the passage" require passage support. Questions asking "the author implies" require inference. Read the question carefully. Trap 4: Picking an answer from a different part of the passage. Always verify that your answer comes from the specific location the question references.

During practice, mark the exact sentence or phrase in the passage that supports your answer. If you can't point to it, reconsider your choice.

Detail Question Drill: Five Questions, Verified Answers

Find a practice passage with at least five detail questions. For each question, (1) identify the key word/phrase, (2) scan the passage for it, (3) underline the sentence containing the answer, (4) write down exactly what the passage says, (5) match to the correct answer choice. Do this for two passages this week. You should complete all five questions in under 3 minutes because detail questions are fast once you follow the method. This drill embeds the spot-and-verify method so deeply that you'll execute it automatically during the test. By the second passage, you'll notice that detail questions follow patterns (searching for specific facts, finding supporting details, verifying claims).

Repeat on another passage. By the third passage, you should answer detail questions faster than any other question type.

Why Detail Questions Should Be Your Highest Accuracy Questions

Detail questions make up roughly 30-40% of ACT Reading. They're the easiest questions on the section because the answer is printed right there. Students who master the spot-and-verify method should achieve near-perfect accuracy on detail questions, picking up 8-10 easy points on the reading section. Many students waste these easy points by rushing, second-guessing, or using outside knowledge instead of passage text.

Use the spot-and-verify method on your next practice test. For every detail question, pause, locate the passage evidence, and verify your answer directly. By test day, detail questions should be your confidence-building, point-scoring section within each passage.
