ACT Prep: Strategic Guessing and Blank Management—Score Every Point

On the ACT, there is no guessing penalty. Every blank is 0 points; every guess has a 25% chance of being right (on multiple choice). Leaving blanks guarantees lost points. Rule 1: Never intentionally leave a blank. Always guess if you do not know the answer. Over a 60-question Math section, randomly guessing 5 blanks gives you expected value of 1.25 points. That difference is real.

Strategy: Use the "mark and skip" method. On hard questions, mark them, skip, and return if time allows. This ensures you answer easier questions first and maximize points before running out of time.

Technique 1 (Elimination): On Reading/English, eliminate obviously wrong answers. If you eliminate two of four, your guess is 50/50. Better odds. Technique 2 (Pattern guessing): If you have randomly guessed the last five questions, vary your answer choices rather than picking "C" for all five. Patterns rarely occur. Technique 3 (Educated guess on Math): If you can narrow down to 2-3 plausible answers based on rough estimation, guess the one that seems most reasonable. Never leave a blank without attempting some reasoning first.

Spend 20 seconds on a hard question. If stuck, eliminate one or two wrong answers, guess, and move on.

Strategy outline: Pass 1 (8 minutes per section): Answer all easy questions confidently. Skip any hard question but mark it. Pass 2 (Remaining time): Return to marked questions. Attempt them with more thought. If still stuck, guess. This method ensures no blanks by test end. During Pass 1, you build confidence answering easy points. During Pass 2, you have time to wrestle with hard questions without time pressure.

Practice this two-pass approach on every timed test until it becomes automatic. You will finish with fewer blanks and higher confidence.

Smart guessing can shift a 30 to a 32 by converting blanks into points. Over 40 questions, one fewer blank per section × 4 sections = 4 more points across the entire test. Guessing strategy alone is worth 2-4 points on your composite ACT score. This is not flashy, but it is real.
