Vector Magnitude and Component Analysis

A vector has magnitude (length) and direction. Represented: v=. Magnitude: |v|=√(a²+b²). Example: v=<3,4> has magnitude √(9+16)=5. Components: Horizontal component a, vertical component b. To find components from magnitude and angle: a=|v|cos(θ), b=|v|sin(θ). Example: Magnitude 10 at 30° angle: a=10cos(30°)≈8.66, b=10sin(30°)=5. Magnitude measures length. Components measure projection on x and y axes. Questions ask you to calculate magnitude, find components, or combine vectors.

Three Vector Calculation Mistakes

Mistake 1: Forgetting the magnitude formula involves squaring, not just adding. |v|=√(a²+b²), not |v|=a+b. Mistake 2: Confusing magnitude with component. Magnitude is a single number (length); components are two numbers (x and y projections). Mistake 3: Forgetting angle direction when calculating components. Angles are measured from the positive x-axis. 30° is different from 120°. Always use the correct angle and sin/cos appropriately.

During practice, write the formula, substitute values carefully, and show all calculation steps.

Five Vector Problems to Solve

Problem 1: Find magnitude of v=<3,4>. |v|=√(9+16)=5. Problem 2: Find components of magnitude 10 at 45°. a=10cos(45°)≈7.07, b=10sin(45°)≈7.07. Problem 3: Add vectors <2,3> and <1,5>. Result: <3,8>. Problem 4: Magnitude of v=<6,8>. |v|=√(36+64)=10. Problem 5: Vector with magnitude 13 and horizontal component 5. Find vertical component: 5²+b²=13², 25+b²=169, b²=144, b=12. Components: <5,12>. Solve all five, showing magnitude/component calculations.
