ACT Math Right Triangle Trigonometry: Solve Any Triangle Using Ratios and Pythagorean Theorem
Pythagorean Theorem and Basic Trig Setup
Pythagorean theorem: a^2+b^2=c^2 (where c is the hypotenuse). Use this when you know two sides and need the third. Example: a=3, b=4. c^2=9+16=25, so c=5. Trigonometry: For an angle θ in a right triangle, sin(θ)=opposite/hypotenuse, cos(θ)=adjacent/hypotenuse, tan(θ)=opposite/adjacent. Use trig when you know an angle and a side, and need another side. Example: angle=35°, hypotenuse=10. Opposite=10×sin(35°)=10×0.574≈5.74. Choose based on what you know: Two sides → Pythagorean theorem. Angle and side → Trig ratios.
Key insight: Label the triangle correctly. Opposite and adjacent are relative to the angle you're using. Hypotenuse is always opposite the right angle.

Mistake 1: Mislabeling opposite and adjacent. Opposite is across from the marked angle. Adjacent is next to it (not the hypotenuse). Mistake 2: Using the wrong trig ratio. sin uses opposite and hypotenuse, cos uses adjacent and hypotenuse, tan uses opposite and adjacent. Mistake 3: Forgetting your calculator mode (degrees vs. radians). If the problem gives degrees, use degree mode. Always verify your angle mode matches the problem before computing trig values.
During practice, draw each triangle and label sides clearly: opposite, adjacent, hypotenuse, and the marked angle. This habit prevents labeling errors.
Five Right Triangle Problems
Problem 1: Triangle has sides 5 and 12. Find the hypotenuse. c^2=25+144=169, c=13. Problem 2: Right triangle, angle=40°, hypotenuse=20. Find opposite side. Opposite=20×sin(40°)=20×0.643≈12.86. Problem 3: Right triangle, angle=30°, adjacent=10. Find opposite. tan(30°)=opposite/10, opposite=10×tan(30°)=10×0.577≈5.77. Problem 4: Triangle has sides 6 and 8. Find hypotenuse. c^2=36+64=100, c=10. Problem 5: Right triangle, angle=50°, hypotenuse=15. Find adjacent side. Adjacent=15×cos(50°)=15×0.643≈9.64. Solve all five, labeling triangles clearly and selecting Pythagorean theorem or trig appropriately.
Find 10 right triangle problems from a practice test. For each, label the triangle, select the method, and solve. By the tenth problem, right triangle solving will be automatic.
