Four Geometry Traps That Cost Points

Trap 1: Forgetting to square the differences in the distance formula. You'll get the wrong answer if you calculate √[4+3] instead of √[16+9]. Trap 2: Dividing only the x-coordinate and forgetting the y-coordinate in the midpoint formula. The midpoint has two coordinates, not one. Trap 3: Confusing slope formula with distance formula. They look similar but give different results. Trap 4: Forgetting negative signs when subtracting coordinates. Double-check your signs before you hit the calculator.

(Answer: 5) Problem 5: Find the midpoint of the line segment from (10,20) to (30,40). (Answer: (20,30)) Solve all five using the three formulas, writing out each step.

Verify your answers using a calculator or graphing tool. If you missed any, identify which step broke and redo that problem. After completing all five with 100% accuracy, you're ready for harder coordinate geometry questions.
