ACT English: Its vs. It's—A One-Minute Distinction That Matters

The Simple Rule That Stops Errors Forever

"It's" = "it is" or "it has." Always expandable to a full contraction. Example: "It's raining" = "It is raining." ✓. "Its" = possessive form of "it," like "his," "her," "their." Example: "The dog wagged its tail" (not "it is tail"). ✓. To test which one to use, try replacing the word with "it is." If the sentence still makes sense, use "it's." If not, use "its." This single test eliminates 99% of these errors.

Example check: "The cat ate its food." Does "The cat ate it is food" make sense? No. So use "its." ✓ "It's a sunny day." Does "It is a sunny day" make sense? Yes. So use "it's." ✓

Why This Error Is So Persistent (And How to Beat It)

The reason many writers mix up "its" and "it's" is that apostrophes usually signal possession ("John's car," "the dog's toy"). So the brain wants to write "it's" for possession too. However, "it" is a pronoun, and pronouns don't use apostrophes for possession ("his," "her," "their," not "hi's," "her's," "their's"). Remember: pronouns break the possession rule. "Its" is the possessive form of "it," no apostrophe needed.

Correction method: Mark every instance of "its/it's" on practice tests. Check it manually. Build the habit until it becomes automatic.

Three Sample Sentences to Practice

Sentence 1: "The company lost its market share." Correct. "Its" = possessive (the company's share). Test: "The company lost it is market share"? No sense. So "its." ✓ Sentence 2: "It's important to finish on time." Correct. "It's" = "it is." Test: "It is important to finish on time"? Yes, makes sense. So "it's." ✓ Sentence 3: "The government announced its decision today, and it's a relief." Correct. First "its" is possessive; second "it's" is "it is." Mark any sentence with "its" or "it's" during practice tests. Verify your choice with the substitution test. Do this verification habit for one week, and you will stop making this error.

Before the ACT test, scan for every "its/it's" and verify manually.
