ACT English Apostrophes: Master Possessives and Contractions Instantly

The Three Rules for Every Apostrophe Error on the ACT

Rule 1: Singular possessive adds 's. Example: "the student's book" (one student owns one or more books). Rule 2: Plural possessive adds only '. Example: "the students' books" (many students own books). Rule 3: No apostrophe for plural without possession. Example: "The students attended class" (plural, not possessive). These three rules eliminate 95% of apostrophe errors on the ACT, so burn them into memory and apply them mechanically every time you see an apostrophe.

Quick drill: "the teacher's lesson" (one teacher, add 's). "the teachers' lessons" (many teachers, add only '). "the teachers graded the exam" (plural verb, no apostrophe). The pattern is clear: singular→'s, plural→', no possession→no apostrophe.

Four Apostrophe Traps on the ACT

Trap 1: Using apostrophes to make regular plurals. "The apple's are fresh" is wrong; write "The apples are fresh." Trap 2: Confusing its/it's. "It's" is a contraction for "it is." "Its" is possessive. Example: "It's raining, and its effects are visible." Trap 3: Misplacing the apostrophe on plural possessives. "The student's grades" (one student) vs. "The students' grades" (many students). This distinction matters. Trap 4: Misplacing apostrophes in contractions. "Don't" (do not) is correct, but "dont" or "do'nt" are wrong. The apostrophe replaces the missing letter, not added randomly.

Create a one-page card with the three rules and example pairs (teacher's/teachers', student's/students'). Reference it daily this week. By test day, apostrophe placement will be automatic.
